This may seem like a straightforward message.
Both parents know the routine. They know where practice is, when it ends and what pickup involves.
What may be unclear is why the arrangement is changing, whether responsibility is being transferred and when an answer is needed.
A clear request gives the other parent the information they need to make a decision.
Before pressing send, you should include four things:
1. What has changed
2. What you are asking of the other parent
3. When you need an answer
4. What happens if the answer is no
1. Explain what has changed
Begin with a short, factual explanation.
This gives the request context without turning the message into a defence or a long explanation.
This explains why the usual arrangement may not work.
2. Make the request specific
Say clearly what responsibility you are asking the other parent to take.
The question should be easy to answer with a yes or no.
Responses such as “I have a meeting” or “I’m busy too” may explain the other parent’s situation, but they do not confirm who is handling pickup.
A clear request also needs a clear answer:
Or:
3. Say when you need an answer
When no response time is given, each parent may make a different assumption about how urgent the request is.
One may be waiting anxiously while the other believes there is still time to decide.
A reasonable deadline creates a shared expectation.
This is not about demanding an immediate response. It is about allowing enough time to make another arrangement if necessary.
4. Explain what happens if the answer is no
Whenever possible, include the next step.
This shows that the other parent is being asked to make a decision, not take responsibility for solving the entire problem.
If there is no alternative yet, say so honestly:
Putting the four parts together
The original message was:
A clearer version might be:
It remains brief, but now the other parent knows what changed, what is being asked, when an answer is needed and what happens next.
Clarity does not guarantee a yes
Keep in mind that even a clear request will not always produce the answer you want.
What it can do is prevent uncertainty from becoming another problem.
Before you press send, make sure the change, the request, the response time and the next step are clear.
A little more clarity can keep a practical problem from becoming a personal one.
